Clearing the waters: DiveInclusive FAQ

Yes — safety is our top priority. All beginner sessions and early courses take place in a swimming pool, led by fully qualified, DBS-checked instructors who are experienced in working with children.

For children progressing to the Junior Open Water Diver course, they will complete their final qualifying dives in a carefully managed open water environment. These dives are fully supervised, risk-assessed, and designed to be a fun and safe next step once the child is ready and confident. We always keep parents fully informed and involved before any open water activity takes place.

The minimum age is 8 and the maximum age is 16.

DiveInclusive aims to create a more inclusive environment in scuba diving by actively supporting groups that may face unique challenges in accessing the sport.

We are rolling out our programmes in phases. At this stage, our focus is on children from ethnic minority backgrounds, due to their underrepresentation in the scuba diving community. This helps us create a welcoming, empowering space for children who may not have previously seen themselves reflected in this activity.

In the UK, ethnic minority generally refers to children who identify as Black, Asian, mixed heritage, or from other non-White ethnic groups — including many Eastern European communities.

We recognise that identity is personal, and we encourage families to use their best judgement when registering. If you’re unsure, feel free to contact us directly.

We’re also working to expand access to young carers & disadvantaged children in the near future. Follow us on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook at @diveinclusive to be the first to know when new phases roll out.

While DiveInclusive specifically focuses on providing free scuba diving opportunities to children from underrepresented backgrounds, we wholeheartedly encourage all children to engage with the exciting world of scuba diving. For those not eligible for our free programs, we recommend exploring opportunities with our trusted partner, JC Scuba. They offer a range of high-quality scuba diving courses for children of all backgrounds.

For more information about their courses, schedules, and fees, you can contact JC Scuba directly at info@jcscuba.net or visit their website at www.jcscuba.net.

Yes — if your child enjoys their first session and wants to continue, they’re welcome to progress to the next available course. However, we offer sessions one at a time so we can support each child properly and ensure they’re ready before moving on. We’ll guide you through the options after each stage.

We provide all the equipment needed — your child just needs to bring swimwear and a towel. No extra gear needed!

Yes — all our sessions and training courses are fully funded, so there’s no cost for the actual diving. We do ask for a small admin fee (usually £5–£100 depending on the course) to help cover basic booking and equipment handling costs. This fee is heavily subsidised thanks to our sponsors and helps us keep sessions running smoothly and fairly.

For the first session, we ask parents or guardians to stay at the pool. After that, you’re welcome to either drop off and pick up, or stay if you prefer. Our team is always on hand to support your child throughout the session.

All participants must complete a medical disclaimer form before taking part.

If any medical conditions are flagged, we may ask for a doctor’s note or further clearance before your child can join. This is just to make sure it’s completely safe for them — we’ll always talk you through the process and do our best to help every child take part.

All sessions take place at local swimming pools in Swindon and are delivered by our trusted training partner, JC Scuba. The exact pool location will be confirmed after registration and is based on scheduling and availability.

All sessions are led by qualified, DBS-checked instructors who are experienced in working with children and young people. We’ll send you full details of the venue and timings once your child’s place is confirmed.

No — all the scuba equipment your child needs will be provided as part of the session or course. There’s no need to buy or bring anything special. We make sure everything fits properly and is safe, so your child can just focus on having fun.

Visit diveinclusive.com/contact/get-registered to complete the short registration form. If your child qualifies, we’ll be in touch with next steps, including how to confirm your spot.

Yes — parents are welcome to stay and watch the session, especially the first time. After that, you’re free to either stay or drop off and pick up later — whichever works best for you and your child.

If your child enjoys their Try Scuba session and is interested in continuing, they may be eligible for our longer training courses such as the SSI explorers series and  SSI Open Water diver certifications — all still fully funded.

We’re only able to offer spaces to children who meet our eligibility criteria. However, if more than one child in the household qualifies, they’re very welcome to apply individually.

Many of our divers start out nervous — that’s completely normal. We go at each child’s pace and make sure they feel safe and supported throughout. Strong swimming skills aren’t required — just comfort in the water and a willingness to try something new.
