Clearing the waters: Your questions answered
Will my child be safe?
Yes — safety is our top priority. All beginner sessions and early courses take place in a swimming pool, led by fully qualified, DBS-checked instructors who are experienced in working with children.
For children progressing to the Junior Open Water Diver course, they will complete their final qualifying dives in a carefully managed open water environment. These dives are fully supervised, risk-assessed, and designed to be a fun and safe next step once the child is ready and confident. We always keep parents fully informed and involved before any open water activity takes place.
What is the minimum eligible age?
The minimum age is 8 and the maximum age is 16.
Who can participate in DiveInclusive programs?
DiveInclusive exists to make scuba diving more accessible to children from groups who may face barriers to participation. Our programmes are rolled out in phases to ensure thoughtful, meaningful inclusion.
Currently, children from ethnic minority backgrounds and young carers are eligible to join our sessions. This includes children who identify as Black, Asian, mixed heritage, or from other non-White ethnic groups — including many Eastern European communities, who are also often underrepresented.
We recognise that identity can be personal and complex, so we encourage families to use their best judgement when registering. If you’re unsure, feel free to contact us directly.
As we grow, we aim to expand access to more disadvantaged groups. Follow us on Instagram, Facebook, Linkedin or X at @diveinclusive to stay updated on future phases and new opportunities.
What Opportunities Are Available for Children Not from any of the underrepresented Backgrounds you cater for?
While DiveInclusive specifically focuses on providing free scuba diving opportunities to children from underrepresented backgrounds, we wholeheartedly encourage all children to engage with the exciting world of scuba diving. For those not eligible for our free programs, we recommend exploring opportunities with our trusted partner, JC Scuba. They offer a range of high-quality scuba diving courses for children of all backgrounds.
For more information about their courses, schedules, and fees, you can contact JC Scuba directly at info@jcscuba.net or visit their website at www.jcscuba.net.
Can my child attend multiple courses or sessions?
Yes — if your child enjoys their first session and wants to continue, they’re welcome to progress to the next available course. However, we offer sessions one at a time so we can support each child properly and ensure they’re ready before moving on. We’ll guide you through the options after each stage.
What should my child bring to a session?
We provide all the equipment needed — your child just needs to bring swimwear and a towel. No extra gear needed!
Are DiveInclusive sessions really free?
Yes — all our sessions and training courses are fully funded, so there’s no cost for the actual diving. We do ask for a small admin fee (usually £5–£100 depending on the course) to help cover basic booking and equipment handling costs. This fee is heavily subsidised thanks to our sponsors and helps us keep sessions running smoothly and fairly.
Do I just drop child off during the sessions?
For the first session, we ask parents or guardians to stay at the pool. After that, you’re welcome to either drop off and pick up, or stay if you prefer. Our team is always on hand to support your child throughout the session.
What about medical conditions?
All participants must complete a medical disclaimer form before taking part.
If any medical conditions are flagged, we may ask for a doctor’s note or further clearance before your child can join. This is just to make sure it’s completely safe for them — we’ll always talk you through the process and do our best to help every child take part.
Where are the sessions to be held?
All sessions take place at local swimming pools in Swindon and are delivered by our trusted training partner, JC Scuba. The exact pool location will be confirmed after registration and is based on scheduling and availability.
All sessions are led by qualified, DBS-checked instructors who are experienced in working with children and young people. We’ll send you full details of the venue and timings once your child’s place is confirmed.
Do I need to buy scuba equipment for the course?
No — all the scuba equipment your child needs will be provided as part of the session or course. There’s no need to buy or bring anything special. We make sure everything fits properly and is safe, so your child can just focus on having fun.
How do i sign my child up for a session?
Visit diveinclusive.com/contact/get-registered to complete the short registration form. If your child qualifies, we’ll be in touch with next steps, including how to confirm your spot.
Can parents or guardians watch the session?
Yes — parents are welcome to stay and watch the session, especially the first time. After that, you’re free to either stay or drop off and pick up later — whichever works best for you and your child.
What happens after the first session?
If your child enjoys their Try Scuba session and is interested in continuing, they may be eligible for our longer training courses such as the SSI explorers series and SSI Open Water diver certifications — all still fully funded.
Can siblings come too?
We’re only able to offer spaces to children who meet our eligibility criteria. However, if more than one child in the household qualifies, they’re very welcome to apply individually.
What if my child is nervous or can’t swim?
It’s completely normal for children to feel nervous — many of our participants start out that way. We go at each child’s pace, ensuring they feel safe, supported, and never rushed.
Strong swimming skills are not required for our introductory sessions, like Try Scuba or Explorers — just basic comfort in the water and a willingness to try something new.
However, for children progressing to full certifications like the Junior Open Water Diver, swimming ability becomes important. SSI standards require participants to swim 200 metres (any stroke) and tread water for 10 minutes as part of the qualification. We’ll help families understand these requirements and work with each child to ensure they’re ready when the time comes.
Our goal is always to build confidence and grow skills step by step.
